MUKK-01:
Recording. Field tape, subject: "fit." The earthling use of the word.
BRAIN:
HI! Brain here! Mukk-17, let me re-introduce myself, hi I'm Brain! we are on EARTH. Brain has been excited for THREE CYCLES. Brain has a BACKPACK!
MUKK-01:
Brain. The backpack is empty.
BRAIN:
Brain will fill it! with RESEARCH! Brain will find RESEARCH and put it in the BACKPACK!
MUKK-01:
We are not collectin' items. We are conductin' observation. On the word "fit." Earthlings use this word to describe garments. Specifically, how the garment relates to the body it is on. A garment may "fit" or not "fit." The word carries weight. The weight is cultural. This is what we are studyin'.
BRAIN:
look at that earthling's pants!
MUKK-01:
Brain, please lower your voice.
BRAIN:
those pants are NOT FITTING. Brain can see it. Brain has observed the RESEARCH already and we have been here for NINE SECONDS.
MUKK-01:
Those pants are called "baggy." It is a style. It is intentional. This is an example of what we are studyin'. "Fit" does not always mean "close to the body." Sometimes "fit" means the garment is behavin' correctly for the earthling's self-image. The earthling has chosen baggy pants. The pants are "fittin'" in the sense that the earthling wants them to.
BRAIN:
OH. so the pants are the pants they are MEANT to be.
MUKK-01:
Yes. Roughly. Write that down.
BRAIN:
Brain did not bring a PEN.
MUKK-01:
[inaudible]
[AMBIENT: eight minutes of observation. one car horn. distant laughter.]
MUKK-01:
Observations, Brain?
BRAIN:
Brain counted NINETEEN earthlings. fourteen had garments that were FITTING. three had garments that were NOT FITTING. two had garments that were FITTING INCORRECTLY, which Brain thinks is a third category we did not know about.
MUKK-01:
That — is an interesting observation, actually. What does "fitting incorrectly" mean, to you?
BRAIN:
the garment is DOING its job but the EARTHLING is not DOING their job. the garment is ready. the earthling is NOT READY for it. the vibe is off.
MUKK-01:
…Brain. That is genuinely useful.
BRAIN:
BRAIN IS DOING GREAT!
